About Our Incense

Natural vs synthetic incense — what's the difference?

Most commercial incense starts with a charcoal or wood-powder base dipped in synthetic fragrance oils. You're burning petroleum-derived fragrance when you light it. Natural incense — the kind we make — uses whole botanicals ground into powder, mixed with makko bark (Machilus thunbergii) as a natural binder, and nothing else. The difference is what's actually burning: chemicals versus plants.

What makes OrientalScent incense different from regular incense?

Our incense is made in Yunnan from dried plants — no charcoal, no synthetic fragrance, no chemical accelerants. We recommend always burning incense in well-ventilated areas.

How long does one incense stick burn?

A standard OrientalScent incense stick burns for approximately 20 minutes, depending on the specific variety and ambient conditions. The fragrance lingers in a room for 2 to 4 hours after the stick finishes burning.

Can I use incense around pets?

We recommend using incense in well-ventilated spaces and keeping pets in separate rooms during use. While our incense is made from pure botanicals, every animal is different and may react differently to airborne particles. If your pet shows any signs of discomfort, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian for guidance.

Why does my incense keep going out?

Incense needs steady airflow to stay lit. If your stick keeps extinguishing, check three things: make sure the stick is inserted at a slight upward angle (not flat), the room isn't too drafty or too still, and the incense is fully dry. Natural incense — especially hand-rolled sticks without chemical accelerants — burns more slowly than synthetic incense. If it goes out, simply relight it.

Which incense scent is best for meditation?

Agarwood (Oudh): Deep, woody, slightly sweet. Used in Buddhist and Taoist meditation for a long time. It's our bestseller — fills a room without being loud. Sandalwood: Warm and earthy. Good if you want something steadier, less sharp than Agarwood. Cedar: Dry and clean — smells like a forest floor. Better if you want the room to feel open, not dense.

Is burning incense bad for your lungs?

Our incense uses only dried plant materials and essential oils — no charcoal, no synthetic fragrance oils, no chemical accelerants. That said, any kind of smoke introduces particulates into the air. We recommend burning incense in a well-ventilated room with fresh airflow. Light one stick at a time, and avoid prolonged exposure in small, enclosed spaces. If you have asthma, allergies, or other respiratory concerns, consult your doctor before use.

Crystal Incense Holders

Do I need a special holder for incense?

Any heat-safe, non-flammable surface that catches ash works — but a proper incense holder makes the experience safer and more intentional. Our natural crystal holders are pre-drilled to fit standard incense sticks, and their weight keeps them stable. If you're using the included alloy holder from our incense sets, place it on a ceramic or stone surface. Never leave burning incense unattended, regardless of what holder you use.

Which crystal should I choose for my incense holder?

Each crystal has different cultural and meditative associations. Rose Quartz is traditionally associated with compassion and heart-centered practice. Amethyst is valued in meditation for clarity and inner stillness. Black Tourmaline is often used as a grounding focal point. Labradorite is admired for its shifting iridescence and association with transformation. Citrine's warm golden color symbolizes confidence and positivity. Green Fluorite is prized for focus and mental clarity in crystal enthusiast traditions. Each crystal is a unique natural specimen — we encourage choosing the one that visually resonates with you.

How do I use a raw crystal incense holder?

Each natural crystal incense holder has a pre-drilled hole sized to fit standard incense sticks. Simply place the holder on a heat-safe surface, insert the incense stick into the hole, light the tip, and let the fragrance fill your space. The crystal's visual presence pairs with the incense's aroma to create a calming sensory experience. Always burn incense in well-ventilated spaces and never leave burning incense unattended.

How should I cleanse and care for my natural crystal incense holder?

We recommend gently cleansing your crystal holder monthly. For daily care, simply wipe away ash with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that may damage the crystal's natural surface.

Orders & Shipping

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery time is 7 to 15 business days depending on your location. Orders over $100 qualify for free US & Canada shipping. Each order is carefully packaged to protect both the incense sets and the natural crystal holders during transit.

What's your return policy?

We don't offer standard returns — our Quality Guarantee covers what actually matters. If your order arrives damaged, defective, or with missing components, contact us at OrientalScent@outlook.com within 14 days of delivery with your order number and photos. We'll arrange a complimentary replacement, store credit, or a custom resolution. This guarantee covers quality defects only, not change-of-mind purchases. We ship artisan products from our workshops in Asia, so we solve issues directly rather than wasting resources on cross-border return shipping. Slight variations in color, shape, or scent are part of the handmade, natural character of our products and aren't considered defects.

Are incense sticks environmentally friendly?

Natural incense is significantly more eco-friendly than synthetic alternatives. Our sticks are made from renewable botanicals with makko bark as a plant-based binder, packaged in recyclable paper boxes, and sun-dried without industrial ovens. Synthetic incense, by contrast, burns petroleum-derived fragrance oils that release volatile organic compounds. We encourage mindful use — burn what you need in a ventilated space, and reuse or recycle the packaging.
