What is Proposition 65?
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The law is administered by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).
Why Does OrientalScent Include This Warning?
Our incense products are made from 100% natural botanicals — pure plant-based resins, oils, and wood powders. We use no synthetic fragrances, charcoal bases, or chemical accelerants.
However, the combustion of any plant material — including natural incense, candles, and wood-burning products — produces trace amounts of chemicals on the Proposition 65 list, such as benzene and formaldehyde. This is a natural byproduct of burning organic matter and is true of all incense products, regardless of brand or quality.
Our Commitment to Safety
We recommend always burning incense in well-ventilated spaces and following the safety guidelines on each product page:
- Burn only on heat-resistant, non-flammable surfaces
- Never leave burning incense unattended
- Keep away from children, pets, and flammable materials
- Use in well-ventilated areas only
